I have curly hair. I’m not talking about a light beach wave that so many girls covet today. I have Shirley Temple- if I don’t wet it daily I have a rat’s nest- curly hair. And if you have curly hair like I do, then you know the number one thing said to you is, “I wish I had curly hair like you.” And every time we reply, “NO YOU DON’T. Trust me.”
So curly hair mixed with where I live, Florida, is not a winning combo. I have frizzy curls from the humidity, and I can’t get my hair to stay straight to save my life. Enter- the Pravana Keratin Smoothing Treatment.
This smoothing treatment is different than a Brazilian in the fact that it’s not permanent. You DO have to keep it up every 6-8 weeks. But let me tell you, if you’re in my situation you may entertain the idea about working overtime to be able to afford it.
If right now you’re thinking “I have straight hair, who cares?” THIS IS FOR YOU TOO! But before I lose my place, let me tell you I did a lot of research to find something that would help my hair straighten easier without it being a permanent solution. Some days I do love my curls, so I wanted to be able to retain them. I have used Pravana products in the past (hair color), and I was really impressed with the coverage they gave.
FIRST THINGS FIRST! If you decide that this option is right for you, make sure to find a reputable salon. I did read some reviews where girls mentioned that their stylist didn’t follow the directions exactly, and it ended up not working the way it was supposed to. I lucked out in finding a salon less than five mins from my house and getting a stylist with 20 years in the biz who once worked for the Dr. Phil show! She also had curly hair, so I felt she understood the struggle, and understood my hair type.
The process involves the treatment being put on your hair, combed through and then blow-dried. I’m not going to lie, it doesn’t smell good, but it’s not damaging. My hair did not experience fall-out or breakage (yay!). After it’s blow-dried then it is straightened with a flatiron. This process happens TWICE! It took about 2 ½ hours from the beginning to the end.
The result? Amazing! Now, I was skeptical because your hair almost always looks great leaving the salon, but after you leave is a different story. BUT, my hair stayed the same until I shampooed it again! And then again, and again. My hair blow-dries in a fraction of the time now, and it is smooth and straight when I’m done. This for me is a miracle. I’m a believer! If you feel that you want to try this, but the price is too steep (It was $220 for my hair length), then you can purchase the system much cheaper on Amazon.com. HOWEVER, this is a long process so you will need help. I really don’t see how you can do it on your own. For me, it’s worth saving up for a treatment every 8 weeks; that’s only $28 a week that you need to save. More economical when you think about it that way, AND you get assistance.
Now, this does not take away your curl; but I did find my curls much looser, and less frizzy. Which is all I really wanted from my hair anyways.
Some things you should know
- DO NOT shampoo hair for 48 hours after treatment
- -You MUST invest in a sulfate-free shampoo. Salt water is a no-no, as it will ruin the treatment immediately; however chlorine is okay.
- Pravana does have a shampoo and conditioner line that they created for this treatment, but unfortunately they have discontinued it. You may still be able to find it on some websites though. It’s called the Perfection line.
Trust me when I say you need this in your life if you are frustrated with your hair. Non-damaging, and it smoothed my hair? No brainer! But don’t just take my word for it; the proof is in the pictures!
So what do you think? Worth the investment? Are you going to research it for yourself? Sound off in the comments below!
